Award-winning writer and CAC special guest Trina Robbins (Pretty in Ink: North American Women Cartoonists 1896-2013) looks at how two women, Lily Renee and Tarpe Mills, presented their Brazilian fantasies to the North American public in the form of adventure strips starring capable, glamorous heroines. Braeden Jones (University of Iowa) demonstrates how contemporary artists recontextualize and reappropriate images, motifs, and themes from historical sources, and compares external artistic influence on Latin America to historical conquest. Nicole Larrondo (Brown University) takes this scholarly journey to Chile, where the comic format is a helpful tool for teaching history, and speculates on the challenges of having the state as the primary support for an artistic form.

We're fascinated by sociopathy, but do we really want to cheer for the bad guy? DC's Suicide Squad blurs the lines between hero, anti-hero, and villain beyond distinction. Are these concepts obsolete? Criminal profiler Mark E. Safarik, M.S., V.S.M.,(FBI Ret., Supervisory Special Agent, Behavioral Analysis Unit) will draw distinctions between killers as disparate as Deadshot and the Joker, using examples from real-life cases. Delving deep into the minds of villains and fans alike, forensic psychiatrists Praveen R. Kambam, M.D., and Vasilis K. Pozios, M.D., (Broadcast Thought) will explore fandom's fascination with villains, reveal how real-life criminals may actually view themselves, and share how fictional characters – including villains – can inspire us through life's darkest challenges. The 501st Legion: Star Wars Villainous Costuming
An introduction to the creation of fan-made villain costumes from all seven Star Wars movies and beyond. Legion members from the Imperial Sands and Southern California Garrisons will provide an overview of the creative process that bring Stormtroopers, Tusken Raiders, Boba Fett, or Kylo Ren from the silver screen in to reality. Dean Amstutz (ISG membership liaison) will discuss the membership journey, from initial interest through final approval. Lesley Farquhar (ISG commanding officer) will present information on the history, organization. and mission of the 501st Legion as "Bad Guys Doing Good"! Kevin Weir (Imperial Surplus Armor, KW Designs owner) will relate his process for working with hard armor parts. Jazlynne Wilson (ISG member) will speak about soft fabric construction. Dawn Bright (Flagship Eclipse Detachment executive officer) will discuss the process and requirements for bringing a new canon costume into the Legion. Todd Mullin (ISG executive officer) moderates.
