The late Ray Zone was known as the "King of 3-D Comic Books," creating 3-D conversions for over 300 comics, including many underground books that he published under his banner "The 3-D Zone," featuring such artists as Robt. Williams, Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, and Basil Wolverton. Zone also hosted a Los Angeles cable-access TV show in the early 1980s where he interviewed many of his artist collaborators. Eric Kurland (CEO of 3-D Space) and Lawrence Kaufman (chairman of the National Stereoscopic Association) will be joined by several of Ray Zone's friends and colleagues to take a look a look at his 3-D underground work, including video interviews from The Zone Show, not seen in over 30 years and only recently discovered and digitized.

The production designer reads 100 pages of nothing-but-words-on-paper and then must literally dream up the most perfect of all possible worlds in which the tale should take place. Though the story may be set in some mythic past, the here and now, or some nearly unimaginable future, it's always human emotion rendered in color and composition. And following that, the designer must gather and organize an army of artists who, over months or years, in plaster or in pixels, will somehow render that design for the big screen. Sixty years ago, EC Comics threw in the towel, shuttering everything but MAD magazine when the Picto-Fiction titles failed to reach an audience. Although defeated by the Comics Code and the moral panic of the 1950s, EC left an indelible mark on the comics medium that's still felt to this day. Artists will create pieces in tribute to the EC tradition before your eyes. These great creators will share their perspectives on censorship and make once-in-a-lifetime art to benefit the Fund's important work defending the right to read comics. A panel of professional cartoonists and graphic novelists draw superheroes based on suggestions from the audience. They will walk the kids through how they approach character design and basic drawing technique.
